Job Title: Network Engineer

Location: Alexandria, VA / Phoenix, AZ (ONSITE)

Duration: 6-12+ Months (possible extensions)

Job Description

The Core Networking team, within the Global Network Infrastructure organization, is seeking a Network Engineer who will help design, build, and operate next-generation network solutions to increase the efficiency, reliability, performance and agility of Uber's global production network.

The team is looking for someone with a passion for building large scale networks, observability and operational tooling, and with an automation focus. We are looking for someone who can grow into a leader within this team, and is happy to both teach and learn. If you value simplicity, work comfortably in a collaborative, fast paced environment, and are excited to both teach and learn, we'd love to talk to you.

Detailed Description of Services:

Provide operational level 1 and level 2 support, troubleshooting and problem remediation of Ubers production data center networks.

Provide production cloud networking support (AWS and GCP), interconnects, and VPC creation

Assist in new production deployments (rack builds/capacity adds).

Engineers may be required to participate in regular on-call rotations.

Collaborate with Uber teams especially Network Monitoring and TPMs on project based work.

New deployments, upgrades and remediation of Uber Networks/Data centers

Remote Deployment Support .

Mid- Level Network Engineer:

Very strong layer 2 and 3 networking Skills.

Minimum of 3-5 years experience in IP networking and large enterprise or production networks

Expert level in IP routing/switching technologies and protocols including TCP/IP, BGP, IS-IS, MPLS, IPSEC, GRE and their best practices.

5+ years of experience as a enterprise cloud network engineer (AWS and GCP)

Experience in managing systems and networks with automation tools

Experience in maintaining 24x7 network infrastructure for a global company

Team Structure

Need engineers who can show a lot of responsibility, accountability and autonomy.

No one onsite managing day to day presence of where they are.

Need positions dedicated to being onsite in the data centers: Ashburn, VA and Phoenix, AZ

There will be a work queue with tickets they should work on, but how they manage their day is up to them. Need to identify which tickets are critical and be able to understand that context and plan their own days autonomously.

Example: If there are 10 things to do in the data center in a week, Vishnu isnt going to tell them how to structure that, they need to figure that out and map it out themselves. If they accomplish all their tasks in the data center, they can work from home.

From technical standpoint: someone who in the past has been a Data Center Operations Engineer: familiar with level 1 things like fiber optics, data center processes and procedures, shipping & receiving, carrier experience, working with telecom ISPs, open trouble tickets, troubleshoot circuits, etc. If have additional networking skills beyond that, thats a plus, but those are the essentials.

Might update the JD to make it more basic. Need strong level 1 data center networking technologies (cable/power/etc.) and the hard work ethic. Working with data center providers.

Two types of profiles who have been successful:

1.           Coming from Junior Network Engineers who have been in Data Center

2.           Data Center operations guys who understand how that side works and have dabbled in networking

Seeing a lot of candidates from NOCs and thats too removed from the infrastructure.

Managing 10,000 network devices. Really looking for someone out of a big big company like Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, Twitter, etc. The scale is very important. Stretches people processes and technology so someone who understands that is key.

Thing he looks for in candidatessees a lot of people on enterprise or corporate side so he wants to see someone from a production environment because its a different mindset.

Dont need the level 3 routing/switching anymore. Dont need the Cloud experience.

Have a data center design team and a data center operations team. They are very server focused. Spend all day swapping memories, troubleshooting systems stuff. This role is very networking focused. Everything comes fully cabled, etc. This role is post rack turn-up. This position works very closely with data center guys, but wont need to do any of that physical work themselves.
